What to do with your wedding dress at home! (HINT it’s NOT try her on!)

how to look after your wedding dress at home

Could 2020 get any weirder?! At least now we have some amazing news that weddings can start happening in some form or another!

I have been planing this post for quite a while now and would you believe I actually started writing this back in April when I thought this would be all over by May, how wrong was I?!

Any way I have put together a little shortlist of tips on how to look after your wedding dress and make sure she is safe at home with you while we eagerly await for your new wedding date to roll around…

KEEP HER IN THE DARK…

and I don’t mean like don’t tell her what’s going on, I mean keep her in a dark room. Wedding dresses are a bit like potatoes, very much unlike me they do not enjoy being in the light and heat and would much prefer to be kept in the shade and preferably in the coolest room of your house (but definitely away from any damp!)

MAKE SURE SHE’S SAFE AND SECURE…

If your dress is happy in her breathable garment bag and you have the room to hang her up somewhere nice and high, make sure she is secure on the hanger, if not, she is going to end up looking like one hot mess, creased up in the bottom of the bag when she falls off!

BOX HER UP…

Some fabrics can stretch out of shape if they have been left on the hanger for too long, so if your dress has a delicate neckline i.e tulle or a really delicate lace, you are going to want to get her off the hanger and get her wrapped up safe and sound in a box with some acid free tissue paper. There are plenty of places to get these from and companies like the Empty Box Company and The Bridal Box company can offer some super pretty storage solutions for your dress.

LEAVE HER ALONE!

This is probably THE MOST IMPORTANT tip of all! Once you have done all that hard work to keep her safe and secure, either in her bag or her box; you MUST resist every temptation to keep getting her out! Even if it’s ‘just to have a look’ Perfume and sweat can and will discolour your dress over time and god forbid, what on earth would you do if you accidently damaged her?

DOUBLE CHECK WITH YOUR INSURANCE

You may need to and probably will want to add your dress to your home insurance as part of your contents cover (if you can.) Just in case!

KEEP IN TOUCH

If you have had to make the heartbreaking decision to postpone your wedding due to the coronavirus, PLEASE make sure you have let your boutique (and who ever is doing your alterations if required) know your new wedding date as soon as you can. As I’m sure you can imagine this huge interruption to our businesses and your beautiful weddings right at the start of the season is now having a massive knock-on effect and will continue to do so for at least the next 18 months, so if we can get a head start on working out a plan of action and getting some dates in the diaries for you, it’s just going to make life easier for all of us.

PLEASE DON’T WORRY

Please don't worry that you might be missing out on having the latest wedding dress, as there is quite literally nothing to be missing out on! I’ve already had this conversation with at least 5 new brides in the last 10 days. The 2021 collection launches have all been postponed too, so your 2020 dress is going to be as good as new when you get married in 2021!

ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THE I DO…

When I do finally get to see you say I do and you have the most fabulous of weddings, make sure you get in touch with Terrington Burchett and get your dress booked in. They offer an amazing service with country wide collection and delivery for cleaning and storing your dress.

If you have any other questions or worries about your dress, please do not hesitate to get in touch!

All my love

Victoria
