A beautiful veil from a non-bridal retailer can look completely identical to a boutique one at a fraction of the price. The same goes for certain jewellery pieces - nobody in that church is going to know the difference between a £400 earring and a £40 one if they're both beautiful and they suit your face. Shop smart, not brand-loyal. But a word of warning, be sure to check the fabric quality and colour, I don’t want you walking down the aisle wearing noticeably different shades of ivory or a veil that you wanted in a softest Italian tulle but is more like the tulle in your petticoat and sitting one way and one way only!

Shoes

I will say this until I retire: Buy the comfortable ones, the ones that have been designed specifically for a Bride on her wedding day, they’re not as expensive as you think they are. Save the money. Your feet will thank you at 11pm when you're still on the dancefloor.

Ready-to-wear and off-the-rack options

This is one that more brides should know about. Please, please do not cut corners on your seamstress. A cheap alteration on a beautiful dress is a disaster I have seen happen, and it is heartbreaking. Understanding what alterations actually involve will help you budget for them properly - and budget for a good seamstress. It is worth every single penny, every single time.

The dress itself

This is the one thing you will wear once and remember for the rest of your life. It is worth the investment. That doesn't mean you need to spend a fortune - it means you should spend what you can afford on the best dress you can find, rather than compromising on the thing that matters most to get a saving that won't feel significant on the day.
