The Bridal Neckline Guide Your Stylist Actually Uses
"I don't know what neckline suits me."
I hear this from almost every bride who walks through our door. And I mean that genuinely - it's not an exaggeration. The neckline question is one of the most common anxieties brides bring to their first appointment, and it's completely understandable. There are a lot of options, a lot of conflicting advice on the internet, and a lot of pressure to get it "right."
So let me give you the guide I actually use. The one based on years of dressing real women, not on what looks good in a magazine.
Sweetheart
This is where I tend to start with almost everyone, because the sweetheart neckline is the most universally flattering shape in bridal. It lifts and defines the bust, creates a beautiful frame for the face and shoulders, and works across a genuinely wide range of body shapes. If you have no idea where to begin, begin here. You can always move away from it once you've tried it on - but nine times out of ten, brides are surprised by how much they love it.
straight/cat ear
A more modern version of the sweetheart (in my opinion) and honestly probably my most favourite neckline. Like the sweetheart it creates a beautiful frame for the face and shoulders, yet gives a little more coverage if you’re not feeling showing off your cleavage, as well as hiding that little but between the boobs and armpits that everyone says they hate and makes them look fat but is just in fact your boobs meeting your armpits, not fat.
Portrait / Bardot
The portrait or Bardot neckline sits off the shoulder and draws the eye inward and downward, which makes it particularly gorgeous for brides with broader shoulders. It's incredibly romantic, it photographs beautifully, and it has a timeless quality that means it won't date your photos. If you want to feel elegant without feeling overdressed, this is a strong contender.
High Neck / Illusion
This one is having a major moment right now, and honestly? It deserves it. A high neck or illusion neckline gives coverage without sacrificing sophistication - it's the neckline for the bride who wants something a little different, a little more editorial, without going full avant-garde. It photographs like a dream, particularly in black and white.
V-Neck
The V-neck elongates the neck and torso, which makes it brilliant for petite brides or anyone who wants to feel a little taller and leaner. It's clean, modern, and works particularly well with minimalist silhouettes. If you're drawn to sleek, contemporary bridal style, a V-neck is worth trying.
The thing I need you to remember
There is no wrong neckline for your body. These are starting points, not rules. The right neckline is the one that serves the feeling you want to walk down the aisle with - and that's something no guide can tell you in advance. That's what the appointment is for.
It also helps to bring people who will champion how you feel, not just how you look - so the fitting room stays a calm, supportive space rather than a committee meeting.
Come in, try things on, and trust the process. I'll handle the rest.
